White Digital

How would I shade a digital white surface?

I am coloring something on photoshop elements (it’s just a regular white dog) but I really don’t know how to go about the shading.
Help?

If you are working from a photograph to do the drawing then study where the shadows are in the picture. If you’re not working from a photo then study as many pictures as you can of similar dogs in similar poses until you get a mental feel for how they are shaped and where their shadows should naturally fall for any highlight direction that you choose.

Set your paint color to a shade you’d like to use for the darkest shadows.

Set your brush to a very low opacity setting. I find that it’s better to work with low opacity and build up the shading than trying to plaster on heavy shades.

First use large brushes to block in the larger areas of shadow and work your way down to smaller brushes to put in the finer shadow detail.
